CHAPTER NINE

VANESSA

“Okay, so we have some snacks and drinks…” I look at our cart, trying to figure out if we’re missing something. “Do you think we need anything else?”

I look up to find Kiara grinning widely at me. “We’re missing the most important thing.”

“What?”

I figured we got all we needed, but maybe she wants something else?

Kiara rolls her eyes at me. “Alcohol, duh.”

“Kiara!” I hiss, grabbing her hand and pulling her to a stop. “You know we can’t drink in public.”

Kiara shrugs out of my grasp and continues walking without a care in the world. “That’s why we’ll go back to your place, mix our drinks in one of these,” she picks up two matching sports bottles off the shelf and lifts them in the air, “and bring those with us.”

“You’re crazy.”

“No, the law is crazy. We’re freaking thirty. Why shouldn’t we be drinking out in the park when celebrating a national holiday like the freaking adults we are?”

I guess she’s right about that, but still… “Maybe we should just bring this all to my place and create a make-shift beach out on my balcony?”

There’s no need to hide booze then. Plus, we’ll be all alone and not surrounded by half the town who’s decided to celebrate the Fourth of July in the park.

“That’s in the shade for most of the afternoon? I think not. This is my one last chance to get some tan this summer because, for the rest of it, I’ll be stuck in the office.”

She pulls the cart toward the drinks section, and I follow dutifully after her.

“That busy at work?”

“Don’t even get me started on it.” Kiara tucks her black braids behind her ear. “We got a big case a few weeks back, and my boss has been riding my ass ever since. Like dude, maybe if you did something besides fuck your secretary, the case would be solved much quicker, you know?”

I almost choke on my tongue at her harsh words. Not that I should actually be surprised. This is Kiara. That woman doesn’t know how to bite her tongue. There wasn’t a person more surprised than me when she said she’d go to law school or when she actually graduated—with all honors too. It’s like there are two different people inside of her. First is my no-nonsense best friend, who can bite somebody’s head off just for looking at you funny. Then the cold-hearted attorney who will wrap her insults in such a pretty package you won’t even know what hit you.

“You’re so bad, Kiara.”

“I just say it as I see it.” She shrugs. “The corporate world sucks sometimes.”

“It sure does.”

That’s why I love my job. There’s no hierarchy, no people hanging over my shoulder, monitoring my every move. Although, honestly, sometimes the kids could be much harsher, but even their brutal honesty is better than people talking bullshit behind your back.

“Screw him. Today is all about relaxation and fun.”

“Amen, sister.”

“I’m so happy that you agree with me.” She turns around, so she’s facing me and continues walking backward.
